Loving God (Deut.10:12,13;Mark 12:30). “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?…And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment.
The demand to love God shows that love is reciprocal. Love is a precious and indispensable virtue we all must covet. I want to concentrate on loving God in this message and continue on another dimension in other message. Love for God is essential in the sense that it was God who first loved us according to John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believed in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”. This verse seems to be the most popular passage in the scripture even some unbelievers quote it. If we believe that God so loves us, how do we reciprocate this love to Him. We all can agree that it is an ingrate that would not love someone who loves him/her and has done so much for the person. Unfortunately that is what many of us humans are. Most human beings even the so-called Christians do not show much love for God. The Bible states clearly that if God so love we also should love Him. From our text in Deuteronomy Moses gave instruction to the children of Israel to love the LORD their God, Why? Because He has done so much for them. He brought them from their Egyptian slavery which no human could do, Pharaoh was a strong tyrant. Loving God is for our own good, of course. When Jesus was in the world one day a young man came to Him and asked Him what was the first commandment. Jesus told him that the first commandment is to love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. In other words the demand is to love God with our whole being- with all that we are. Some of us may want to hide under the pretence of how can I love someone I do not see. The Bible clearly states how we can demonstrate our love for God. We demonstrate our love for God when we do or obey His will or His commands. The Lord Jesus said, “If you love Me, Keep My commandments”. “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” Our love for God must be total. We love God when we share His love to others. We demonstrate our love for God when we serve Him alone without any other object like idols, or images. Whoever claims he/she belongs to God and still serves idols is an idol worshipper, God does not accept that fellow. As Christians, let us show our love for God in total obedience to His word. This is the way to show that we love Him, there is no short cut. Do this for your good and it shall be well with you. Love your God
