THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS AND CONVERTS
Scripture Lessons
EPH. 4:8-16; ACTS 2:1-41; JN. 16:8-11
Memory Verse: And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterances. (Acts 2:4) NKJV
One of the great enemies of revival is the carnal man. The Bible sometimes refers to carnal mind as the flesh. Though the flesh is supposed to die when one is saved, yet the flesh wants to rise again and take control of the life of believer. While the Holy Spirit is working to bring out holiness in the believer, the flesh is struggling to trap the believer in ungodly living. Walking close to the Holy Spirit protects the believer from becoming captive to the control of the flesh. If revival within a congregation is to last, the Holy Spirit must be given full control. Without the Holy Spirit, if revival occurs, it will be short-lived.
Point of Emphasis: The flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh.
Prayer Point: Holy Spirit, take total control, empower us not to fulfil the lust of the flesh.
BACKGROUND
Revivals or spiritual awakening are times of great manifestation of God, the
times of great outpouring of God’s Spirit. In the light of the above, the work of the
Holy Spirit in revival is very important. This week’s lesson will focuses on some important work of the Holy Spirit in revival.
NOTES ON THE TEXT
I. REVIVAL COMES THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT REVIVAL – ACTS 2:1-41
Revival, as we all know is divine intervention in the affairs of believers. It is God revealing Himself to man in an awesome way. It is man returning to the background because God has taken over. All these are the work of the Holy Spirit. In our passage for this division, we can notice what happened when the Apostles received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit came upon them:
– revival started – the people that were hiding came to the limelight.
– their messages become very powerful, and
– they did exploits for the Lord.
II. HOLY SPIRIT EQUIPS THOSE GOD USES FOR REVIVAL – EPH. 4:8-16
When revival is about to happen, God always equips and empowers some people he intends to use with the Holy Spirit. The ministers of the Gospel must have the power of the Holy Spirit that makes them sufficient for the ministry before any revival can take place. People that pray earnestly for revival are always inspired by the Holy Spirit. Those who minister and cause miracles to happen are equipped by the Holy Spirit – example of Philip in Samaria – no Holy Spirit, no revival.
III. HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS AND CONVERTS SINNERS – JN. 16:8-11
Revival primarily happens among the believers, then it spreads to the people outside the Church. Before the revival that happens among God’s people can have impact upon the community, the Holy Spirit must be involved because he is the one that will convert the world of sin – Jn. 16:8-11.
The ministry of the Holy Spirit to unbeliever is that of conviction. He makes them know the gravity of sin, the certainty of judgment and availability of righteousness and the defeat of Satan. When the Holy Spirit is backed up by the evangelistic ministry of the Church, unbelievers are always converted to Christ regularly. This is revival. Therefore, the work of the Holy Spirit in revival is vital.
CONCLUSION
The primary purpose of any revival is to cause spiritual awakening and edification of the body of Christ – the Church. To achieve spiritual awakening among member and edification of the Church, any spiritual activity that will bring these must be backed up by the Holy Spirit. Jesus affirms that the word He speaks is Spirit and Life – John 6:63. In the light of the above, one will agree that the role of the Holy Spirit in revival is very important.

LE SAINT-ESPRIT EMPECHE LE CARACTERE CHARNEL
GA. 5:16-25
