Paul, the Tentmaker
Acts 18:1-3; 1 Thess. 2:9; 2 Thess. 3:7-10
Apart from the secular and religious education that Paul was exposed to, he also learnt a trade – tent-making to support himself. Unlike what happens today when people waste all their time searching for white collar jobs that do not exist, he was adequately prepared with another stream of income. As a preacher, he was not dependent on his followers to carry all his burdens as he was using his extra time to provide for his needs as seen in our texts. We have lots of lessons to learn from our study today. Our children should learn a trade in addition to their secular education and the church should tend more towards bi-vocational ministries. Someone wrote recently, bi-vocational ministry is the future of the church if the church is to fulfil the Great Commission. Members are expected to take care of their leaders but there is a limit to which they can do this in the present economic situation.
Point of emphasis: Learn a trade, increase your stream of income.
Prayer Point: Make us wise, Oh Lord, in the face of the economic situation of the world to take right decisions.
