Sunday 20th December, 2015.
In every month of December, most Christians from all walks of life celebrate the birth of Jesus. For several of the celebrants, it means a time of drinking, sending gift, dancing, going to clubhouses with boyfriends or girlfriends. And yet to some others, it means a time of sober reflection, and gratitude to God’s love for the world and also preach the gospel not minding whether it was the month of December or not. Let us consider some few things out of the many that Jesus’ birth means.
· To God the Almighty: It meant the greatest sacrificial gift of love for the world for salvation. (Jn. 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”)
· To the nation of Israel and the world: It was the birth of the Messiah and the Savior from sin (Matt.1:21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”)
· To the angels of God: It was an announcement of good news of salvation to the world (Lk. 2:10,11) “Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”)
· To John the Baptist: It was the introduction of the Messiah and the Lamb of God. (Jn1:29, 32-34 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”)
· To the godly and devout old Simeon: It was seeing God’s salvation and fulfillment of prophesy: (Lk.2:25-32 25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: 29 “Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation 31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, 32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.”)
· To the apostle Paul: It was the coming of a Savior to save sinners of whom he was chief. (1Tim. 1:1515 “This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.”)
· To the Jewish religious leaders: It was the stone that the builders rejected. (Matt. 21:42,43 “Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes’? 43 “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it.”)
· To the believing world: It was and is still the birth of the only one Savior and way to heaven. (Jn. 14:6 “ Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through.”)
· To Jesus Himself: It was the demonstration of the highest degree of love for a sinful and dying world. (Jn 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”)
I can still go on and on but the fact is that your answer to the topic of this discuss “what does the birth of Jesus mean to you” will determine your destiny for now and eternity. The truth is that every sinner should accept Jesus as his/her personal Savior and repent from sinful lifestyle entirely. No other way to heaven, it is salvation for you if you believe. To all true believers, it means a time to go out and preach the gospel which “is the power of God to everyone who believes. (Rm. 1:16)
